Our Arbor Day Tree Costume

Standard

Arbor Day – let’s take care and appreciate our trees.  We love our planet.  The Morton Arboretum in Lisle had an Arbor Day costume competition. To celebrate this day my mom made costumes that looked like trees.  My mom has been a seamstress for years..as children all our clothes were handmade by her (all six kids). I still remember the girls having the same style dresses on many occasions (took the headache out of recreating).  In the last 10 years she suffered three strokes but, thanks to Jehovah she still has mobility.  I am very happy she was visiting from Jamaica. Thanks Mom!

For this costume we got the material from Hobby Lobby.  My mom did measurements and then stitched all these together.  I  think she did an awesome job.

The highlight of this day was not the competition but, helping to plant a tree. Children learn from different platforms and this was an excellent opportunity to showcase the importance of trees and its effect on the planet. It was also another great day to play at the Morton Arboretum.

They had so much fun we made two trips – in the morning and afternoon.

Fresh Air and Play Time

Fresh Air and Play Time

Our little daycare with a ‘Big Heart’ spends many hours outdoors.  Outdoor play is very important to us.  Children are happier when outdoors.  They have the freedom to explore, play and make countless discoveries. I am happier when the children are happy.  Want a stress free day?  Let the children play outdoors…don’t just watch them play but, get into the play with them. Release the stress and anxieties of a day by playing, dancing and exercising,  boost your feel good endorphins.  Another bonus is that the days go by faster.

It doesn’t matter the season..we dress for it and make the best use of the outdoors.

Happy Mother’s Day 2015

Standard

Oh mother you have given me a gift of a ‘lifetime.’   You were the first person to love me, care for me and cherish me.  There is no other love like a mothers love.  I have been given that gift too and I am blessed to have my own two children and others.

Thanks to my daycare I have been mother to many.  I get to be called mommy, mamma, mamma Sue  until these little ones develop enough vocabularies to say Miss Sue.  I am happy to share our Mother’s Day project with you.

My two Love Bugs

For this project we used old baby formula tins, wooden frame from  Michaels, felt alphabet, stickers, and a trip to Home Depot.

The children then painted the tins and the frames.  They chose their colors.

DSC00204 She loved the orange hue because it’s her moms favorite color.

We then taped some dollies on the tin and painted on it.  This formed a pretty  pattern that moms will love. Each child did their own tin.

They took turns gluing on the felt M.  I gave them some tacky glue to add on each piece because the adhesive on the decorative pieces usually don’t last long..so some other glue helps to secure it.  I like tacky glue/ clear glue because it works on almost everything.  This you can get at any craft store.  I got mine from Walmart.

We then made a trip to Home Depot – what’s Mothers Day without some real flowers.  The kids chose their flowers…except the baby:)

I then transplanted them to the tins they decorated.

How Lovely!!!

Oh, I pierced holes in the tins and covered with the top of the formula can for easy watering. DSC00944

The kids had a final touch on their frames because they just love to glue things:)

Painting with Balls

Painting with Balls

This project was done in early Spring 2014.  The long winter had us creating many art works.  The children were given some paint on paper in a basket, and then a ball to shake in the basket.

Add the balls and have fun shaking the basket.

These paintings had to lay flat to dry.  I did this to prevent the paint from running because it was still wet (watery).  The children were happy with their work of art – so was I.

This project encourage the children’s creativity because the shaking of the balls in a particular motion yielded different patterns and colors. They utilized their problem solving skills to figure the patterns and blended colors. Their fine motor skills were also utilized when they held the basket. Fun Fun Fun 🙂
